For hundreds of years the Breed hid who they from humans but all that changed twenty years ago with First Dawn. Since First Dawn there have been wars between the humans and Breed but things have finally been peaceful thanks to Lucian and The Order, groups of warriors trained to solve Breed issues and protect them at all costs. Kellan and Mira grew up in the order just as First Dawn was beginning. Both were orphans and formed a bond, with their friend Nathan, that grew into an amazing friendship.
Twenty years later Mira is still with the Order and Kellan is presumed dead for the last eight years. Mira has mourned Kellan very hard and is shocked when she is taken hostage after a botched mission and finds her friend and lover still alive and heading a rebel group. Kellan has always loved Mira but he left to save her and never expected to see her again. The passion and love is still there between these two and Mira will do anything in her power to not lose Kellan again.
Let me start by saying that I highly recommend you read these books in order and you might be able to start the series with
Edge of Dawn but I don’t recommend it. With that being said it was so great to be back with the Midnight Breed series and catching up with all of the past characters. Edge of dawn picks up twenty years after
Darker After Midnight left off and we get to see how Nathan, Kellan and Mira have grown up and are introduced to the Order’s grown up children. I love seeing what has happened over the years with The Order and that we will get to go on adventures with all of the kids.
Edge of Dawn is a good book but it’s not a favorite for me. I have liked Mira ever since we met her as a young child in Veil of Midnight and she has grown up to be a kick ass warrior. I love that Kelland and Mira are together but I disliked that Kellan let Mira think he was dead for so many years and that he kept tabs on her while he was gone. While Mira fights and fights for her and Kellan he just accepts defeat over and over again and it really bothered me. I wanted Mira to walk away finally and make Kellan work for it because he needed to grovel and fight for the woman he loves.
As I mentioned before we get to catch up with the older original members of The Order and we get to spend a lot of time with Lucian. Lucan has always been my favorite and I love any time that I get to spend with him. My only gripe was that a lot of the book is spent with characters other than Mira and Kellan. Nathan and Lucian get a lot of page time and yes it is important to the story but it does take away from the main love story. It needed to be done to set up the new generation’s stories but I felt like every time we got to a great part with Mira and Kellan we left them to go to Lucian and the problems the Order is having.
All in all I did enjoy this book and I am so looking forward to the new generation and learning more about what has happened after First Dawn. I hope that we will get Nathan’s book next which I can’t wait to read and will be sitting around twiddling my thumbs until I get it.
Edge of Dawn may not be my favorite of the series but it is a great addition and a must read for all fans of this series.
